The rise of AI has brought with it equal parts excitement and fear. For some, it’s a lifesaver, helping us draft, edit, and organise at lightning speed. For others, it’s a looming threat, stirring questions like: Will my role still exist in five years?
But somewhere between the hype and the headlines is a more grounded reality: AI isn’t here to wipe us out. It’s here to change how we work, and if we use it wisely, it can actually free us up to focus on the things humans do best: drive creativity, empathy, and meaningful connection.
That’s exactly why I loved sitting down with Leanne Shelton, expert copywriter turned global AI coach, to chat about her new book AI Human Fusion. Leanne’s message is clear: AI should amplify us, not replace us.
The “AI-Ick”
Leanne admits she’s not a techie. Yet when tools like ChatGPT landed in her industry, she saw the panic from colleagues around her and felt some of it herself. As clients turned to free tools instead of hiring copywriters, she had two choices: fight against it or find a new way forward.
Her pivot into AI coaching showed her something bigger: people aren’t scared of AI content because of the technology itself, but because so much of it sounds generic and soulless (e.g the AI is untrained on how to support its user). What we need is authentic AI content that still carries our quirks, our humour, and our voice, and is best set up to work for us.
Human-Centered AI
That’s where Leanne’s HABITS framework comes in:
- H - Humans: prioritising connection and reducing overwhelm.
- A - AI: training the tools so they understand your context, tone, and audience.
- BI - Business Integration: thinking about ethics, security, and transparency.
- TS - Tactical Strategy: embedding AI into teams in practical, human-first ways.
For Leanne, this isn’t about shiny new platforms or hacks. It’s about keeping AI human-centred and remembering that it’s a tool to support our expertise, not erase it.
Balancing AI and Human Voice
One of my favourite parts of our chat was Leanne’s analogy of treating AI like a brand new intern. You wouldn’t hand a first-day junior intern a project brief and say, “Write me a business plan.” You’d give context, guidance, and targeted feedback before setting them the task.
AI content creation is no different. Without your clear input, you’ll get bland, cookie cutter results. But with your direction, you can balance AI with your human voice, your quirks and your beliefs, to produce content that feels and sounds more like you.
Why Ethics and Authenticity Matter
Leanne also highlights the ethical side of AI content. She’s transparent about when she’s used AI in her own work, often adding a line like “written in collaboration with AI and my human brain.” For her, this is both about integrity and showing what’s possible when humans and technology work together.
It’s also about resisting over-reliance. As she says, if you’re using AI because you’re burnt out and too tired to think, you’ll miss the chance to critique and sharpen the output. That’s when authenticity really starts to slip away.
What This Means for Leaders and Creatives
Whatever you’re doing for work, whether you’re in business, leading a team, or even running your own side hustle, Leanne’s advice is this - AI writing tools are here to stay, but your skills, experiences, unique insights, and untapped creativity are irreplaceable - leverage those.
The future belongs to those who use AI content wisely to cut through the noise, save time on the grunt work, and still keep their human edge.

If you’ve been feeling the “AI-ick,” then you’ll love this episode. Leanne’s perspective is both grounding and practical, and it reminded me why quirks, humour, and our individuality matter so much. And, full disclosure - This article was written with the help of my AI’s much better spelling and grammar skills!
